New South Wales will soon be under new leadership following the shock resignation of Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

It comes mere hours after the Independent Commission against Corruption announced it would be investigating allegations of corruption and breaches of public trust in relation to Ms Berejiklian’s relationship with disgraced former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire.

The Corruption watchdog launched an investigation into Mr Maguire’s dealings while in office before his 2018 resignation.

The public hearing where the Premier was questioned by ICAC lawyers dropped a bombshell: The Premier had been in a relationship with Mr Maguire, spanning his time in office until the months prior to the hearing.

ICAC announced the investigation into Gladys Berejiklian earlier this afternoon, and she announced her resignation shortly after.

I love my job and I love serving the community, but I have been given no option, following the statement that’s been issued today to continue as premier would disrupt the state government during a time when our entire attention should be focused on the challenges confronting New South Wales.”

The resignation will take effect once a new Liberal Party leader is chosen via party room vote, expected on Tuesday.
